Rio 2016 Paralympic Games were a public success, specially because many people had contact with some sports for the first time. Who followed and vibrated at the paracycling trials will have another oportunity to feel the Games emotions at the Paracycling Track World Championship that will happen at the same stage, Barra Olympic Park’s Velodrome, from March 22 to March 25. The gates will open at 9 am and the entrance is free.
“We have no doughts that the organization and the emotion will be the same as the Games. The public at the Velodrome will be able to vibrate with the brazilian team and also with the great stars of the sport like the australian paralympic medalists Alistair Donohoe and David Nicholas, the american Joseph Berenyi, the swedish Jorgen Gustafsson, the dutch Alyda Norbruis and, of course, the brazilian Lauro Chaman” said Edilson Rocha, the “Tubiba”, organizer of the event.
More than 170 athletes (almost 240 if counting the Tandem category pilots that don’t have disability) of 30 countries will fight for the 114 medals of the competition. The Para-Cycling Track World Campionship is divided in six caegories, one for visual disabled (Tandem) and five for different grades of physical disability and amputated (C1 to C5), for men and women. Besides that, there is a mixed trial that athletes from different categories form a team.
The brazilian delegation is one of the biggest of the Championship, it is on the eighth position. The biggest are Greai-Britain (22 competitors), United States (18), Australia (16), Russia (14), Ireland (13), China and Spain (12), Malasia (10) and Argentina, Netherlands and New Zealand with 9 completes the Top 10.
The Rio 2018 Para-Cycling Track World Championsh, first competition of the category to be held in Brazil is even more importante because it is the first big competition to count score for the ranking that will select the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games participants. Paracyclism is the third sport with more medals on the Paralympic Games after Athletism and Swimming.
